Struggling with Spanish bureaucracy?

You're not the first. The system is slow, not broken — there's a real difference. Here's the path that works, written by people who've done it. No going in circles.

A sequence that actually works

Your first 30 days, by week.

Don't try to do it all in week one. The bureaucracy will still be here in February. Pace yourself.

Week 1

Rest and orient

  • Sleep properly. Don't fight bureaucracy this week.
  • Walk your neighbourhood at 9am, 4pm, 11pm.
  • Buy a Spanish prepaid SIM (Lowi, Yoigo, Pepephone — €10/month).
  • Find your bar with good coffee.
Week 2

Get the padrón

  • Book a cita previa at sede.valencia.es (alarm for 23:55).
  • Gather: passport, rental contract, application form.
  • Show up to the appointment. 20 minutes, free.
  • Photocopy the certificate. You'll need it everywhere.
Week 3

Get covered

  • Walk into your centro de salud with padrón + NIE + passport.
  • Get your SIP card registration (provisional issued same day).
  • If non-EU and still without NIE: buy private cover for the gap (€40-90/month).
  • Register with a GP.
Week 4

Belong to one thing

  • Pick one recurring weekly thing — class, circle, sport, language exchange.
  • Commit to going every week for 2 months.
  • Open a Spanish bank account (Openbank, EVO — 30 minutes online).
  • Set up Bizum once your IBAN is live.

Who to call when you're stuck

When to hire a professional — and which one.

Three different roles, three different costs. Most expats use all three at some point. Knowing the difference saves money.

Gestor

Handles paperwork. Padrón, NIE, autónomo registration, SIP, vehicle papers.

Typical cost
€50-150 per task, or €80-120/month on retainer
When
When a form has rejected you twice, or you can't get a cita.

Abogado

Spanish-qualified lawyer. Property, divorce, visa appeals, employment disputes.

Typical cost
€80-200/hour, or €1,500-3,000 flat for major matters
When
When the question is ‘is this legal?’ or ‘what are my rights?’

Asesor fiscal

Tax advisor. Quarterly autónomo filings, annual renta, Modelo 720, Beckham Law.

Typical cost
€60-90/quarter; €150-400 for annual renta with foreign income
When
If you have any income from outside Spain, or you're going autónomo.

How to find one you can trust

  • 1. Ask a local Valenciano you trust — a colleague, landlord, the person at your corner bar. Most have used the same gestor for years.
  • 2. Search Valencia expat Facebook groups for the same recommendations come up again and again.
  • 3. Google Maps reviews in Spanish — filter to Spanish-language reviews and look for the pattern of complaints.
  • 4. Try one small task first before signing a retainer. Avoid anyone promising results the law doesn't allow.
